Media 140′s event covered the benefits of using Social Media in the Work Place. Andy Piper from
IBM introduced us to how social media can be an easy fun way of communication and exchanging
information with your fellow employees, however an element of trust is essential.
If Social Media isn’t used in the right way employers can loose trust in their staff and therefore
employees must be made aware of what information is appropriate to share online. If used in the
right way social media can be a successful way of wide communication and can enhance
relationships within the company.
The second person to speak was Matt O’neill who leads Event Extra, an industry that “transforms
internal conferences through better communication and greater team involvement –before, during
and after your event.”
He explained how social Media can be used to create a hype before conferences and get staff more
involved during. Tweets before, during and after a conference can be exciting for staff remembers
and give them a sense of involvement whilst it also gives them the chance to share what they’ve
learnt with other people.
Matt then went on to talk about virtual events where ink discussions staged at your conference and
other locations directly with colleagues operating elsewhere in your organisation. Employees can
ask questions from the confront of their computer whilst the talkers are then able to answer them
Whilst at the conference we interviewed Richard Hare a Knowledge Management, Communication
and Collaboration consultant from the British American Tobacco Company. He said he used
Facebook and Twitter out of the work-place however as of yet the British American Tobacco
Company haven’t introduced those forms of Social Media to the company. He mentioned he’d
found the conferences really interesting and said he uses the internet to find similar events on a
regular basis and he shares the conference information with his friends- another advantage Social
Media is capable of offering to company’s.
The conference was really enjoyable and welcoming. The room was engaged and the speakers were
excited to be there. It was an all round interesting experience and we’re incredibly thankful for the
speakers and Media 140′s hospitality and inspiration.
